Hi 👋, my name is Richard Chen

I am in my 4th year as a student in the Bachelor of Computer Science second-degree program at the University of British Columbia. I graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the University of Alberta, where I went on to work in public accounting for 2 years. Since then I've decided to pursue my interest in software development by undertaking this after-degree program!

  • Spotify Song Recommender - A Spotify Song Recommender with a JavaScript React frontend, Node.js/Express REST API, Flask backend using a two-level retrieval machine learning pipeline trained with KMeans and KNearestNeighbours
  • Course Grade & Campus Room Explorer - Historical Course Grade and Campus Room HTML Scraper written in TypeScript with an Express backend and Svelte frontend.
  • Payment Processor Simulator - Designed to model a crypto currency payment system written with React, PostgresSQL, Javascript & Node.JS
  • Discord Hackathon Bot - A Discord bot written in JavaScript on Node.js that assists in the formation of hackathon teams with basic team management functions.
  • Billable Hour Tracker - A desktop app built in Java with Swing enabling the tracking of billable hours for projects using a Test-Driven Development approach.

Learning Projects

  • Shop App - A cross platform (Android & iOS) shopping app built with Dart & Flutter, utilizing Firebase as the backend.
  • Great Places - An experiment in using Android/iOS native hardware (Camera) through the Flutter SDK. Also used SQLite & the Google Maps API.

Hackathons

  • AuditApp - Hack the North 2021 - A platform for financial auditors to exchange documents with clients. Uses the MERN stack and Google Cloud Document AI to perform document scraping functions.
  • Workmate - HackCamp 2020 - An app create with React intended to foster employee relations through charitable social events.
  • Team CAR - CodeML 2020 - Placed 2nd in the Movie Reviews Sentiment Analysis Challenge.
